THE KOLI THESES SET OUT STEPS TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

All impacts of climate change cannot be avoided by adaptation or mitigation alone, and simply with the current level of knowledge and political willingness; however, they can complement each other and together can significantly reduce the r risks of climate change.

Forests, the lungs of our planet, provide global wellbeing and a sustainable source of renewable raw-materials for the bioeconomy sector. Domestic decentralised and renewable solutions for energy and other production were seen as very important especially from a social point of view. The Koli Forum emphasised innovative, energy- and raw-material saving, and effective use of forests.

In this, development technology plays an important role, but technology alone cannot be seen as a solution.

To be realised, sustainable bioeconomy needs a new mind-set, innovations and a strong political will, as well as consumer commitment. The Koli Theses set out steps towards a more sustainable future.

KOLI FORUM GOES TO THE CORE OF THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS

Koli Forum is moving towards becoming a significant, if not key arena for European opinion leaders from the spheres of business, politics, science and culture who are attempting to search out the best policies for a future that takes into consideration both the potential and the limitations of natural resources.

The results of the Koli Forum go directly to the core of the European Union and other international decision-making bodies.

- The Forum has aroused great interest among decision-makers, says Liisa Tahvanainen the Secretary General of the Koli Forum.

Speakers worthy of note include the co-chair of the UN Panel on Global Sustainability Development, the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and the Forestry Director for FAO.

The Koli Theses elaborated at the Forum will deliver the know-how necessary to enable us to cope with future challenges affecting a wide public, as well as long-term perspectives for a constructive public discussion.

GREETINGS FROM SECRETARY GENERAL

I am pleased to have the chance here to let you know how preparations for the Koli Forum 2011 are progressing. We have got off to an excellent start by obtaining wide participation of opinion-leaders in the Koli Forum.

Common views and proposals for the management of natural resources and the development of the bioeconomy are increasingly needed. Koli provides excellent surroundings for innovative and constructive brainstorming and discussion. Finland has a long tradition of acting as a peacemaker and negotiator in complex situations. Following the spirit of the first Koli Forum chaired by president Ahtisaari, we are searching for new ideas to tackle topical questions related to natural resources, taking into consideration economics, the environment and social responsibility in a balanced way, thus enabling different stakeholders to lend their support.

A large number of organisations from industry, the European Union, NGOs and others have given their support to the second Koli Forum to be held from 14 - 16 September 2011. Thank you for your support so far, and we would be grateful if you would help to elaborate the Koli Theses by participating in the online Forum (Sitra) survey.
